Your guide to preparing your home for homecare
As our loved ones age, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to maintain their independence. Homecare provides a way for them to stay in their own homes while receiving the care and assistance they need provided by family members, friends, or professional caregivers.
There are a variety of medical equipment and home care products available to help make life easier for the elderly and those with disabilities. Below is a list of some common home care products you would need:
1. Hospital Bed – A hospital bed is a type of bed specially designed for patients who need medical care. Unlike regular beds, hospital beds have moveable side railings for safety and wheels to move the bed if necessary. Hospital beds are adjustable, allowing the patient to be raised or lowered as needed. These functions help to improve a patients breathing and help with blood circulation throughout the body, preventing a lot of illneses from worsening. The functions of the hospital bed also allows the caregivers to have better assistance with the patient's daily needs and activities.
2. Anti Bedsore Mattress - Anti Bedsore Mattresses are strongly advised to be used if the patient bedridden or has very limited movements. Pressure ulcers (or bedsores) are caused from poor blood circulation due to the lack of movement. There are 4 stages of pressure ulcer with the 4th being the most serious and potentially life threatening. The most important step in both treating and preventing bedsores is relieving pressure by frequent repositioning. Treatment also includes the management of pain, prevention and treatment of infections, and eating a protein-rich diet which may improve wound healing.
3. Wheelchair – A wheelchair is a chair with wheels that is used by people who cannot walk. There are many varieties of wheelchairs but they all serve the same purpose which is to provide mobility to those who need it. Deciding on which wheelchair to use depends on the patient's requirements. If the patient is elderly or someone who suffers from a stroke, they would require a high-back wheelchair with neck support called a Reclining Wheelchair that shifts the user from a sitting position to one where they are close to lying down. This change in position reduces pressure on the buttocks and gives the user a break from remaining seated in the same spot.
4. Bedside Commode – A bedside commode is a type of chair that is placed next to the bed for patients with difficulty getting to the bathroom. Bedside commodes are most beneficial for those with reduced mobility, and long-standing illnesses or injuries. They're better than alternatives like bedpans and urinals, and getting out of bed altogether helps reduce the risk of developing pressure sores. Plus, sitting up while using a bedside commode is easier on your body when emptying your bowels.
5. Walking Sticks – Walking sticks are canes or crutches that are used to help people walk. They provide support and stability for those who have trouble walking on their own. As you age, it is inevitable that you will lose muscle mass to some degree. This can cause problems with balance and coordination, making it difficult to walk properly, thus requiring a walking stick for support.
If you are considering homecare for yourself or a loved one, talk to your doctor or home care professional to discuss what options are available. They will be able to advise you on the best products and equipment for your individual needs.
